Scheduling and Planning in Oracle Prime

In this post, we will walk through the Scheduling features of Oracle Prime and will try to understand the advantage over P6 EPPM.

As we know, Primavera P6 EPPM already has excellent scheduling & Planning capabilities, even though, Oracle comes with another good product “Oracle Prime”. As of now, it is the only cloud-based application hence unavailable for the local environment.

Oracle Prime has a dedicate & powerful app (module) for scheduling & Planning, which has in-built integrated with other apps (modules) of Oracle Prime.

Likewise P6, Oracle Prime scheduling is based on the Critical Path Method and provides functionalities like Schedule Health Check tool, what-if schedule scenarios, Resource Levelling, customise views etc.

Let discuss, what’s the upper hand of Oracle Prime and being a user what additional scheduling capabilities we will get in Oracle Prime.

Being a Primavera SME, many times, my users ask me the shortcut way to create the Primavera schedule. Sometimes users have activities and dates scheduled in excel and seeking the way to directly import excel sheet into P6 EPPM to create a schedule. But here is the limitation in P6 that you can’t create schedule directly from excel sheet.

Somehow, Oracle Prime has an advantage here by providing some flexibility in creating a schedule from excel sheet. Even you can Import WBS from excel sheet as well, I think which a limitation of P6.

Another Limitation in P6 schedule is that you can’t link activities with “scope”. But Oracle Prime provides you the capabilities to link your activities to scope assignments and work packages. Scope assignments and work packages inherit dates from their associated activities.

Oracle Prime Scheduling has one more feature which P6 is lacking. Oracle Prime enables you to convey information about general “uncertainty” for each project activity by defining three-point estimates.

Oracle Prime schedule app supports “Discussion” as well which provide a way for the project team to communicate and exchange a variety of information on a wide variety of objects like activities, resources, costs, risks, scope assignments, tasks etc.

As it is also an Oracle Product, hence it has seamless integration flexibility with P6 EPPM. Which means can you export/import data across both applications without the need for a Primavera Gateway connection. You can export P6 EPPM or P6 Professional schedule (P6 xml) and can directly import into Schedule app of Oracle Prime. While exchanging scheduling data, Prime provides you various options to the ability to specify what action application takes in different business scenarios.

Another cool feature that you will get in Oracle Prime Schedule Management is “Snapshot”. At any moment of time, you can take a snapshot of your current schedule or scenario. And later you can convert your snapshot into the baseline. If required, that really cool…

Also, you will get Alter feature in Oracle Prime. It’s really an interesting feature of Oracle Prime. I will write a separate post to explain Alter mechanism of Oracle Prime.

In last, I would like to say, Oracle Prime scheduling provides the solution that integrates Critical Path Method scheduling, task management, and risk management — helping your team to deliver project objectives.

In upcoming posts, I will share the how to create various objects in Oracle Prime.
